Rhinoplasty for the Wide Nose: How to Get the Best Results?

Updated: Feb 3

Our facial beauty is decided by the symmetry and balance of the features of our face. The nose lies in the middle of the face and its appearance matters to everyone. Unfortunately, many people dislike their overall facial appearance and symmetry because of their wide noses. They might feel conscious and insecure about their looks and even become less confident. The good news is that Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is an effective solution to fix a wide nose and its associated problems.

In this article, we will be discussing rhinoplasty, its related elements, and how it provides the best results. This informative blog was created by taking insights from an expert plastic surgeon, Dr. Shilpi Bhadani who is known for offering effective rhinoplasty in Delhi. This will help educate the readers at their best. Let’s start learning about it.

Wide Nose Issues

A wide nose refers to the nose width that extends beyond the distance between one’s eyes. Different features of the nose profile such as bulbous nasal tips, mid-bridge bumps, and flared nostrils can make the nose appear wide. It can considerably affect the facial aesthetics of an individual as it tends to be flatter instead of projecting outwards concerning the rest of the facial features.

A wide nose can make other facial features, like eyes and mouth, look small in contrast. Moreover, if the nasal passages of the nose are flat, this may lead to troubled breathing because of restricted airflow. In such cases, an individual may be more likely to be at risk of sleep apnea and further suffer from a stroke or a cardiac disease.

How can Rhinoplasty Help Fix a Wide Nose?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a facial reconstructive plastic surgery that targets improving the aesthetics of nose profile, balance, and function. It helps create or restore optimal proportions of the nose and the rest of the face.

Rhinoplasty can address many nasal structure issues, one of which is the wide nose. A rhinoplasty for a wide nose is specifically designed to narrow, straighten, or correct the angle of the nose. The procedure often involves lifting the nose skin, restructuring the nasal bones and cartilage to get the nose in harmony with the remaining face, and then putting the nose skin back in place. It is a bit different from traditional rhinoplasty as its procedure involves different surgical techniques.

How to Get the Best Results with Rhinoplasty to Fix a Wide Nose?

For a disproportionately wide nose, there are several different approaches that plastic surgeons may take to best repair and reconstruct the nose with rhinoplasty. A surgeon can help determine the appropriate rhinoplasty method used to correct a wide nose.

Types of Rhinoplasties Used for Wide Nose

A rhinoplasty to address a wide nose will not be the same for every candidate. Based on the candidate’s situation and the desired end goal, different surgical techniques can be used. Some of the most common rhinoplasty approaches performed to correct wide nose include:

  • Osteotomy- A wide nose can be an outcome of excess bones and cartilage in the upper part of the nose. In such a case, osteotomy can be an ideal corrective option.

  • During an osteotomy, the top nasal bones are broken down into smaller pieces and rearranged to narrow the nasal bridge.

  • The extra nasal bones may be either removed from the middle or the outer sections of the nasal bone, thereby letting the plastic surgeon easily recreate the nasal bridge.

  • Nasal tissues may also be removed to help achieve a smaller-looking nose.

Type of Osteotomy

Depending upon how much nasal bone restructuring needs to be done and whether the nose is too wide at the tip or the bridge, an osteotomy can be done either using an open procedure or a closed one

  • In closed wide-nose rhinoplasty, two incisions are made within the nostrils. However, in open wide-nose rhinoplasty, an additional incision is made across the columella- the connection between two halves of the nose to gain better access to the nasal bones.

  • Closed wide nose rhinoplasty is an ideal approach for wide noses that may require minor restructuring while open wide nose rhinoplasty is for the too wide nose requiring major restructuring.

Note: In contrast to the other two types, this kind of rhinoplasty for the wide nose is more invasive and associated with longer recovery- often up to 2-3 weeks.

  • Tip Plasty- Some people possess a disproportionately wide nose because of an asymmetrical or enlarged nasal tip rather than a wide nasal bridge. A bulbous nose tip can be caused by extra nose cartilage, extra space between the cartilages, poor definition of cartilages, or thick skin at the nose tip. For them, the surgeon recommends bulbous rhinoplasty- the tip plastic technique. This procedure is less invasive than traditional rhinoplasty as it does not alter the nasal bone.

  • During a tip plasty, either the surgeon makes two incisions inside of the nostrils (closed approach) or makes an additional cut in between the nostrils (open approach).

  • Depending upon the shape of the bulbous nasal tip, either the surgeon will bind widespread cartilage together to achieve a sharper, narrower tip; place new cartilage on the nasal tip to extend the nose in addition to making it look sharper; or reposition the existing cartilage of the nasal septum.

  • Alar Reduction- In some instances, wide or flared nostrils can make one’s nose look wide. Alar reduction is the best approach to address this concern and allow one to have a proportionate, smaller nose. The procedure involves either reducing or tying together the fleshy skin parts on the nostrils that connect the nose to the rest of the face.
